Cornflower - Centaurea cyanus

Common Name : Bachelor's button, Cornflower, etc.
Botanical Name : Centaurea cyanus
Family : Asteraceae (sunflower family)

Today it is another foreign flower in my Blog. This is native to the Europe. I am not sure but probably I have seen this flower before in several gardens in Bangladesh. It's English names are Cornflower, Bachelor's button, etc. I do not know any suitable sounding Bengali name of this flower. It's botanical name is Centaurea cyanus and belongs to the family Asteraceae. This is the national flower of the country Estonia. You may also want to read more about it's Folklore and Symbolism from wikipedia.

It is an annual herb that grows around a foot or two in height. Leafs are very narrow, long, and arranged alternately around the stem of the plant. The stem is covered with white things which gives a grey appearance to the plant. This mostly grows naturally around the roadsides, or around the cultivated fields.

The flowers in my photo are blue and lavender in color, but it can be in many different colors these days. Flowers are double and borne on a long stalk. Cornflower is edible and previously it's color was used in the salad.

Photos of this article were taken from the Godawari Botanical Garden, Nepal. It was the month of May 2014.
