Cluster fig, Ficus hispida

Cluster fig uses to grow around wet lands, specially around the ponds, canals etc. This is normally a shrubby type of semi/evergreen tree and can become a medium size tree sometimes (It can reach up to 10 meter). The stems are almost soft and hard to climb for a grown up human. I have seen lot of kids playing around such kind of trees and also I have experienced such pleasure during my childhood.

Cluster fig (Ficus hispida) leafs are a bit larger in size and very rough at both sides. Rubbing the leafs over the skin will leave scratching marks. It produces a fruit like round object and numerous flowers use to be inside that round fruit like object. It uses to produce such flower more or less every season in Bangladesh, but you'd find more during the rainy season.

English names of the plant are Cluster fig, Hairy fig, Devil's fig, etc. The fruits are having wasps inside which use to born and die inside the fruit. Those wasps usually help to do the pollination.

We don't use to plant this tree intentionally. It grows naturally without any nurturing. To our villagers, it is kind of useless plant. Only they can use this tree as wood supply for their burners. Though the fruits of this plant can be used to recover belly pain and other sickness related to that portion, but we are not aware of that.

Photos of these Cluster fig (Ficus hispida) were taken from Shonargaon of Narayanganj district of Bangladesh during my tour of August 2011. In Bangladesh we call this as Dumur (ডুমুর), Kak dumur (কাক ডুমুর), etc.
