This bright red flowering plant is native to Mexico and Central America. Common name of the flower is Poinsettia (after the first US minister of Mexico). This plant is also known as Ataturk flower in Turkey. Botanical name of the ponisettia is Euphorbia pulcherrima. It pertains to the plant family Euphorbiaceae.
Poinsettias are perennial shrubs that are typically grown as indoor or potted plants. They have dark green leaves arranged in an alternate pattern along the stems. The leaves are often long and ovate, with serrated edges. Poinsettias can vary in size, ranging from small compact varieties to larger bushy plants.
The flowers of the Poinsettia are actually small and yellow, but they are surrounded by showy modified leaves called bracts. The bracts are the most striking feature of the plant and come in various colors, including red, white, pink, and variegated combinations. The bracts are often mistaken for petals, but they are actually leaves that change color in response to the plant's flowering cycle.
Poinsettias prefer a warm climate and are typically grown indoors or in sheltered outdoor locations. They require bright, indirect light and should be protected from drafts and extreme temperatures. Poinsettias thrive in well-draining soil that is kept consistently moist but not overly wet. They are sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Poinsettias are often treated as short-day plants, meaning they require long periods of darkness to trigger flowering. To induce blooming, they need extended periods of darkness (12-14 hours) for several weeks leading up to the desired flowering period.
Poinsettias are popular ornamental plants, especially during the holiday season. They are commonly used as festive decorations and are often associated with Christmas. Poinsettias can also be grown as garden plants in suitable climates.
Photos of these Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) were taken from the University of Dhaka at 21st February 2016.
