Guava is a widely cultivated fruit that is native to Americas. But later it spreaded to all over the world. Botanical name of the plant is Psidium guajava. It belongs to the plant family Myrtaceae. In Bangladesh it is known as Peyara (
Guava (Psidium guajava) is an evergreen small tree. Instead of growing tall it prefers to spread branches. The stem and the branches are very hard. They are bendable but very hard to crack. Bark has a color of copper. The bark gets peeled off continuously as it grows (like the skin of a snake). Leafs are smooth at upper side and rough at underside. Alternately arranged leafs are having visible veins.
Guava (Psidium guajava) flowers are snow white in color with a mild fragrance. They have 4-5 five elliptic shaped petals but they are curved like spoon. Center of the flower has numerous (compare to flower's size) white stamen with pale white filaments. Pollination of the flower is mostly done by the insects and bees.
Guava (Psidium guajava) fruits can be in any sizes from small to a size of a grapefruit. They can be in various shapes as well (i.e. pear, round, ovate, etc). They are green at outer side, but can be white or pink at inner side. A guava fruit uses to have plenty of light brown seeds inside. Plant from the seed brings fruit after few years. That's why people mostly use the cutting plant for commercial use.
The whole fruit is possible to eat. It contains plenty of vitamin C. This plant can disperse by the birds and other animals who eat ripe guava. They find it hard to digest to the seeds and thus help spreading with their stools.
