Botanical Identity
Portulaca oleracea, commonly known as Purslane, is a succulent annual herb belonging to the Portulacaceae family. It is believed to be native to North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of India, but has naturalized across much of the world due to its adaptability. Often considered a weed, it thrives in disturbed soils and hot, dry climates, and is commonly found in gardens, pathways, and agricultural fields. Despite its modest appearance, Purslane has been appreciated for centuries for both its resilience and nutritional value.
Plant Description
This low-growing herb has smooth, reddish stems that sprawl along the ground, forming mats. Its fleshy, oval-shaped leaves are arranged alternately or in clusters, and store water to survive dry periods. Portulaca oleracea can grow up to 30 centimeters wide but rarely exceeds 10–15 centimeters in height. It prefers sunny locations and sandy or poor soils, making it a common sight in urban and rural settings alike. Its succulent nature helps it survive extreme heat and drought.
Flowers and Fruit Characteristics
Purslane produces small, bright yellow flowers that bloom in the warmth of the morning sun and close by afternoon. These flowers typically have five petals and appear singly or in clusters at the tips of the stems. After flowering, it forms small seed capsules that contain tiny black seeds, which are dispersed easily and can remain viable in soil for years. The plant flowers throughout the warm months, and its prolific seed production ensures its persistent return each season.
