Four o'clock flower(সন্ধা মালতি ফুল) - Mirabilis jalapa

আমাদের চারপাশের বেশীরভাগ ফুলগুলি সকালেই ফোটে... কিন্তু প্রকৃতিতে এমন অনেক ফুল আছে যেই গুলো রাত্রে ফোটে... আবার এমন কিছু কিছু ফুল আছে যা শুধু সন্ধায় ফোটে... যেমন আমাদের সন্ধ্যা মালতি ফুল... উজ্জল পিংক কালারের এই ফুল সারা রাত থাকার পরে সকালের পরে চুপসে যেতে থাকে... আমাদের গ্রাম বাংলার লোকেরা এই ফুলকে সন্ধ্যার ফুল বলেই ডাকে... ভারতের আসাম দেশের লোকজন এই ফুলকে ডাকে গোধুলী গোলাপ নামে... আমার এই নামটা অনেক পছন্দ হয়েছে...

This flower is native to South America. But after stepping inside this country with the hand of Spanish merchants, it just embraced our nature and environment. Now a days no one will believe that it was a flower from far island having thousand miles of distance. The name of the flower is Four O'clock Flower.



Botanical name of the flower is Mirabilis jalapa. Pertains to the plant family Nyctaginaceae. It has other common names like Marvel of Peru, Shower flower, Purple Jasmine, etc. In our country Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ), this flower is known as Shondhya Maloti Ful(সন্ধ্যা মালতী ফুল), Shondhya Ful(সন্ধ্যা ফুল), etc. In Assam of India, this flower is known as Godhuli Golap(গোধুলি গোলাপ).



This is an ornamental flower, used to grow in pot, garden, etc. Shondhya Maloti(সন্ধ্যা মালতী) is available in various colors, but I didn't see anything other than Purple. Leafs are slightly ovate shaped with pointed at one side, can grow up to one meter in height. Shape of the flower is like a funnel(like Morning Glory flowers). Plant used to propagate using seeds.

During my travel at Dinajpur(May 2012), for the first time I have seen the white colored Shondha Maloti Ful(সন্ধা মালতি ফুল). I have uploaded few photos for the flora lovers.
