Common name of this ornamental flowering plant is Arabian jasmine, Sambac jasmine, etc. Bionomial name of this plant is Jasminum sambac. It belongs to the plant family Oleaceae. Although this is known as Arabian jasmine, but this beautiful flowering plant is native to the South Asian region. Later it was naturalised into many other tropical countries. This is the national flower of Philippines.
Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is mainly a small bushy evergreen shrubby plant which normally grows 1-2 ft in height, but can grow more. The woody stems sometime seems vine like. Leafs of this evergreen plant are ovate (sometimes lens shaped). Wide glossy leafs are found oppositely arranged around the stem. This plant likes sunlight. Propagation of the plant is made using the cutting mostly. Fruits are berry like round, but rarely seen propagated using seeds.
Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) flowers are small, milky white in colour and having very strong fragrance. This flower is seen in both double and single flower. Most of the cases this flower blooms during night, but still you'd see this flower in the tree during day time. Small garlands use to be made from this flower which women use to decorate their hair bunch.
For the lovely fragrance people put this plant in their garden as an ornamental plant. This is a nice plant for the pot as well. The fragrance of this flower is used in perfume. Popular Jasmine tea is also made from this flower. In Bangladesh this flower has a high demand to decorate (specially during marriage, or party).
