Ghetu Ful(ঘেঁটু ফুল) - Clerodendrum infortunatum

ছোট বেলায় বাক্স বদল নামে একটা ছবি দেখেছিলাম... সৌমিত্র আর অপর্ণা সেন অভিনীত... সৌমিত্র থাকে ডাক্তার... সে সব সময় তার রোগীদেরকে তিনটা প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস করে... এর মধ্যে একটা ছিল তাদের প্রিয় ফুলের নাম জানতে চাওয়া... মোটামুটি সব রোগীরাই উত্তর দেয় গোলাপ বা এইরকম পরিচিত কিছু একটা ফুলের নাম... যখন অপর্ণা সেনকে জিগ্গেস করা হলো... তখন সে উত্তর দিয়েছিল 'ঘেটু ফুল'... ঐ বারই প্রথম আমি ঘেটু ফুলের নাম শুনলাম... তখন থেকেই মাথায় ঘুরত এইরকম একটা আনকমন ফুল, তাও আবার একজনের প্রিয়... কেমন দেখতে সেই ফুল??? তখন ইন্টারনেটও ছিলোনা যে সার্চ করে একবার দেখে নিবো... আজকে সেই ঘেটু ফুলের ছবি দিলাম... এই ফুলের বাংলায় অনেক নাম রয়েছে... যেমন ভাট ফুল, ভাইটা ফুল, ভাত ফুল, ঘেটু ফুল, ঘন্টাকর্ণ, প্রভৃতি...



Bengali name of this flower is ghetu(ঘেঁটু ফুল), ghontakorno(ঘন্টাকর্ণ), bhat(ভাত ফুল), bhaita(ভাইটা ফুল), etc. Common name of the flower is Hill Glory Bower. Botanical name is Clerodendrum infortunatum. It belongs to the plant family Verbenaceae. This is native to our region.

Red bracts are holding the seed/fruit.

This exotic but neglected common flower is ponderously available throughout the whole Bangladesh. This Clerodendrum flower is often seen beside the road side, wasted lands, etc. Flower blooms mainly at Rainy season(June-July-August). But at few regions flowers use to come at the ending portion of Spring(February-March). At other seasons you'll hardly see the plant. Cause these useless plant go under a heavy cleaning, and most of it's parts are slashed.



This is a perennial bushy plant. Its kind of a gregarious plant, mile after mile beside the road, you'll see these plants. During rainy season, its a lovely scene when white colored flowers are on the bush having purple center. Flower blooms as cluster and each flower from the cluster is having exactly five petals. Flower is having a purple touch at the center. Stamens are long and having a pinkish filament atop. After demising of the flower, the bract becomes changes it's color into red and which holds the seed/fruit until it's life cycle ends.
