Punarnava(পুনর্ণভা ফুল) - Boerhavia diffusa

Punarnava(পুনর্ণভা ফুল) is an interesting medicinal plant that grows at our country Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). Botanical name of this plant is Boerhavia diffusa from the family Nyctaginaceae (Bougainvillea family). It has several common names like Hogweed, Tar vine, etc. I don't know what exactly we call this in Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ), but in Sanskrit it is being called as Punarnava(পুনর্ণভা), which means rejuvenate.

It is a creeping weed herb that use to sprawl around from the main root. Plants use to lay over the ground. Leafs are ovate or slightly pointed round shaped. Leafs are unequal, but somewhere near to 'oppositely arranged' around the stem.

Punarnava flower(পুনর্ণভা ফুল) grows over a short stalk from the main stem. Color of the flower is pink, light pink, purple, etc. Flower grows as cluster. Each flower from the cluster is having 2-3 stamens with a slightly long single stigma. Small flowers are shaped as a bell.

Fruits of Punarnava(পুনর্ণভা ফুল) are quite interesting. These are vicious and stuck over the feet of grazing animals, or with the birds. Basically this is how the plant use to disperse from one place to another.

Roots of this plant is mainly used at herbal medicine. It helps to assuage several hepatic disorders and analgesic pains. At some part of India, the edible leafs are using as vegetable.

This is a weed plant, but it didn't seem invasive according to my observation. Also, it has no gregarious properties either to call this invasive.

All the photos of this article were captured from Chapainawabganj(চাপাই নবাবগঞ্জ) of Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). I was traveling there during June 2012.

ফুলের জন্য ভালবাসা, আমি বুনো ফুল...

  4. I have seen this plant near the "Chhoto Shona Moshjid" of Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh... It will be difficult for you to identify the plant exactly, if you have no expertise on flowers...

You can take photo of this flower and ask to villager to show you the plant. Flower are very small in size... fruits are sticky... and the leafs are silvery at the other side... Hope this will help you to identify this life saving plant..!
